The Astronomik OIII-CCD Filter is ideal for imaging OIII nebulae from light-polluted locations or dark skies. It dramatically enhances contrast between objects glowing at 501nm and their background, giving you clear, high-quality images.
With a narrow bandwidth of 12nm and typical transmission of 96%, this filter effectively blocks unwanted light from UV to IR, providing a dark background and maximizing contrast. This makes it perfect for imaging nebulae and other faint objects, especially in light-polluted areas. Unlike narrower 6nm filters, this 12nm version allows more stars to be visible in the field of view, providing more guiding stars for astrophotography with integrated or dual guiding chips.
Designed with MFR coating technology, the filter performs optimally with all instruments up to f/3 without significant performance loss.
Important Note: The Astronomik OIII filter must NOT be used for solar observation.
When observing from light-polluted sites, narrowband emission-line filters like the OIII filter are essential for capturing stunning deep-sky images. The OIII filter is perfect for capturing nebulae with a greenish or bluish hue, while the H-alpha filter is ideal for red-emitting nebulae. Combined with an SII filter, you can create false-color images like those produced by the Hubble Space Telescope.
Using narrowband filters, you can achieve deep, high-contrast images, even in challenging conditions such as heavy light pollution or a full moon. The OIII filter opens up imaging possibilities for planetary nebulae and star-forming regions, providing enhanced contrast and sharper details.
By combining the OIII filter with H-alpha-CCD and SII-CCD filters, you can create Hubble-style false-color images (HSO) even from light-polluted sites. The 12nm bandwidth allows more stars in the field, making it a good choice for regions of the Milky Way with dense star populations.
If you prefer imaging faint objects in star-crowded regions with shorter focal lengths, consider the 6nm OIII filter. It reduces the number of stars in the field by a factor of two, making it ideal for cameras with low dark current or for observing from heavily light-polluted locations.
